DaVinci’s Exile  Message Board

Welcome to the DaVinci's Exile message board — originally created for the denizens of DaVinci's Exile in Excite's VP Chat to keep in touch.

Who are we? An eclectic group from Virtual Places chat who have in common a desire for good conversation, a modicum of intellectual stimulation, and rather good taste in music, art, and food. Other than that, we run the gamut.  :-)

Anyone is welcome to post here — please keep it clean, and please keep in mind that no flaming will be tolerated. We won't censor postings, but we will also maintain the right to delete posts that are abusive or construed as offensive to the users of the board.

[ To New Test Message Board ]

July 3, 1998

What happened to the old board? Editrix would love to know herself. She blithely came here last night, and lo and behold, nothing would post anymore. This is after she spent more than 8 hours (yes, 8 hours) trying to archive the messages from the last two weeks. At least, all that was lost are messages from the last 3 days.

I view this as a sign from the gods. I wanted to try a new message board as a test. We can still test it for a week (link above), then if we like it, I will make it a permanent shift. I hope you guys like it. It has great advantages, which I waxed eloquently about ... in the message I couldn't post here on the old board. To summarize:

It is not as pretty as the old one here ... but it is far more functional, and runs far better. It has functions such as automatic email alerts, the ability to set a cookie to fill in your name and email address for your posts, and an automatic category function. And more. Play with it and you'll see. Wish I could make it prettier, but with all the functionality, and the fact that it runs for free on the MIT server, I'm not going to knock it too much. Take your time and play with it -- get used to the knew interface.

(1) We can automatically archive our old posts by date (say, they expire after one week). They don't go away, though. They simply move down to a category rather than stay "up top." That means all new postings will be easy to find. And old ones even easier to find after they "move down."

(2) We can put a password on the board if we'd like to (not passworded now).

(3) We can see all the posts as "questions" ... and each question has replies as "answers." Only the questions/posts are shown in the main page listing -- this means the page loads MUCH faster. To see all the replies to a post, just click on the "question" and all the "answers" below show up appended to the original post.

(4) We can embed HTML codes, even image links. (downside: You must use the BR or P command or all your text runs together. I can live with that, frankly, for all the advantages.)

(5) As administrator I can edit posts if someone wants something changed. I can move posts to categories, I can change the expiration date on posts to keep them "new" or "old."

(6) The board is on the MIT Media Lab server -- it loads super fast, and is super easy to use.

I am REALLY sorry about the death of the old board. This week has been worse for me than I can say. My computer is still dead, for instance. I hope that the new board is acceptable and that you all learn to like the new interface -- it does take some getting used to.

Email me if you want to complain. I am certainly open to that. I complained to myself earlier today, and I even got a mail message back. Not bad, eh?

Here's to the new board! May it live longer than the old one.
